BUILDING A TURTLE DOCK ON LAKE THOREAU

A Gold Award project

I'm Mercer Thomas, a senior Girl Scout and this is my Gold Award project. In recent years around the world and in Reston, turtle populations have been declining. When I discovered this, I wanted to find a way to help and bring awareness to this issue. I looked at how my community had changed over the years and realized that a common and continuing problem turtles face is reduced access to sunny basking spots in rivers and lakes which are vital to their health. This problem is caused largely by housing expansion which can be combated by providing turtles with spots for them to enjoy. Through this blog I will document the construction of my turtle dock, as well as provide resources for others to get involved and help local turtles!
